Kendrapara to Bhitarkanika Distance: Route, Travel Time & Transport Options

Kendrapara to Bhitarkanika National Park is about 60 km by road. Expect roughly 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic near the delta. Head out of Kendrapara town on the state highway toward Pattamundai, about 21 km. Continue on to Rajnagar, then cross the bridge over the Brahmani river. At the junction on the far side, take the road toward Khola rather than Gupti. Most visitor entry points sit along this final stretch.

The road narrows past Rajnagar, and surface quality drops in patches closer to Khola. Give yourself extra time here rather than counting on highway speeds for the whole trip. Monsoon rain can worsen this stretch further, so budget more time between June and September.

Two routes connect Bhubaneswar to Bhitarkanika, and both run through Cuttack first. The National Highway route continues through Chandikhol before turning toward the park. It runs a little longer but stays on wider, faster roads for most of the drive.

The State Highway route turns off through Salepur instead. It cuts a few kilometres off the trip, but expect narrower roads and slower going through the smaller towns. Either route lands you in Rajnagar, then follows the same final stretch toward Khola described above.

From Cuttack, expect around 115 to 135 km depending on the route, about 2.5 to 3 hours. Cuttack sits before the split described above, so the same choice applies. Continue via Chandikhol for wider roads, or via Salepur for a shorter but slower run. Cuttack also works as a rail and bus hub if you’re arriving from further away and switching to a taxi.

Private cab: the most practical option for the full route, especially from Bhubaneswar or Cuttack. Book through your hotel or a local operator a day or two ahead during peak season. Expect the driver to know the Rajnagar to Khola stretch better than a generic map app.

Shared auto or shared jeep: covers shorter local legs, such as Kendrapara to Pattamundai or on to Rajnagar. It does not cover the full 60 km run. Rates run low, but departures depend on enough passengers showing up. Build in extra waiting time.

Bus: state transport buses connect Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Kendrapara to Rajnagar on a fixed schedule. None run the final stretch to the park gates. Plan on a shared auto or a short local taxi for that last leg.

Boat safaris start at dawn, in the 7:30 AM slot. A day trip from Bhubaneswar means a 3.5 to 4 hour drive before you even reach Rajnagar. You miss the best wildlife viewing window and arrive into the heat of the day instead.

A 60 km run from Kendrapara is a far easier early start than 150 plus km from Bhubaneswar or Cuttack. Book a stay near Bhitarkanika in Kendrapara the night before. Leave in the dark and still make the first safari slot with time to spare. Compare a few hotels in Kendrapara before you book if you want to weigh your options.

1. Leave Kendrapara town on the state highway toward Pattamundai, around 21 km.
2. Continue from Pattamundai toward Rajnagar.
3. Cross the bridge over the Brahmani river at Rajnagar.
4. At the junction past the bridge, turn toward Khola. Do not follow signs toward Gupti unless that is your intended gate.
5. Follow the final stretch to the entry point, watching for narrower road width and slower going.

Roads near the delta flood easily during monsoon. Avoid this route between June and September if you can. If you must travel then, check conditions directly with your hotel before you set out.
